Geographic Information Systems Intern – Capacity Project

The Capacity HRIS and IntraHealth IT group is looking for a GIS intern to support the GIS laboratory. This position is part-time (approximately 20 hours per week) for Spring Semester 2008. Specific tasks for the internship are to:

• Support the development of an open-source, online-mapping module for the HRIS information systems, based on MapServer, Chameleon, and other tools;
• Development of cartographic products using existing and new spatial data according to internal branding standards;
• Providing GIS consultation to IntraHealth staff
• Researching available spatial data resources;
• Support in the presentation of spatial results;
• Training others regarding the techniques for spatial data collection, management, analysis, and display;
• Support regional and global partnering of health mapping.

A Bachelors degree in geography, geographic information science (GIS), or closely related field is strongly preferred. Candidates must demonstrate a working knowledge of map projections; data management, analysis, and cartographic display using ArcGIS; GPS data collection, and have a strong interest in open-source geospatial technologies. Experience with MapServer, PostGIS, Access, SQL, and other GIS-related tools is highly desirable. The successful candidates will be able to work independently and must have a strong interest in medical geography and preferably have experience with working in developing countries. The GIS intern will become part of a highly dynamic and growing team of information specialists.
