Director of Communications

This position provides vision and leadership to increase IntraHealth’s global visibility for technical and organizational excellence. S/he directs the design, execution and evaluation of the organization’s overall communications strategy, processes and activities, using the organizational strategic plan and annual business plan as a guide. S/he directs a team of communication experts, writers, graphic designers, and knowledge management professionals. S/he works collaboratively with other teams across the organization to ensure efficiency, synergy and consistent communications messages. The Director reports to the Vice President for External Affairs. Develops and executes the overall communication strategy and related priorities, goals, objectives, products and activities. Design targeted communication campaigns linked to specific organizational or programmatic initiatives. Actively builds and maintains productive relationships with a network of media contacts and press and communications staff among current and potential partners. Provides leadership in the development and expansion of IntraHealth’s creative use of audio-video, information technology, internet and social networking to achieve communications goals. Builds strong relations with US and country-based staff to effectively communicate IntraHealth’s successes to internal and external audiences and to build marketing and public relations capacity across the organization. Ensures that IntraHealth’s worldwide projects and programs receive timely, quality communications-related technical assistance and support. Works closely with the fundraising team to align priorities and coordinate activities related to raising IntraHealth’s profile among current and potential donors. Provides leadership in strengthening internal knowledge management strategies and systems to facilitate access to key program and organizational information throughout the organization. Works closely with the broader External Affairs team, staff from the Program Division, and other colleagues throughout the organization to ensure that all communication and knowledge management initiatives build on organizational core technical achievements and facilitate synergies across existing programs and initiatives. Ensures that high standards of quality are maintained in all communication and knowledge management activities, products and events, including continuous review and assessment of lessons learned and best practices. Directly supervises senior communications and knowledge management staff members, and provides senior-level leadership to ensure that clear expectations, required tools and resources are in place to achieve organizational goals and objectives. Provides guidance, coaching and mentoring as needed to ensure teams and individual staff members perform responsibilities toward desired results and encourages teamwork to meet overall objectives. Oversees that resources allocated to communications and knowledge management are used effectively and appropriately, and are aligned with available human and financial resources. Represents IntraHealth and advocates for its mission at national, regional and international conferences and events.

Minimum requirements for this position include a BA/BS in public relations, marketing, communications, or related field. Advanced degree preferred. Ten or more years of progressive experience in communications, marketing or a related field.A minimum of 5 years or recent supervisory experience.A track record of leadership in using electronic media/internet-based communications and social networking in effective communication strategies. Demonstrated experience in successful communication campaigns, initiatives or on-going programs at the national or international level. Ability to build, maintain and regularly access a strong network of media and related contacts. Advanced knowledge of the elements of publishing from editorial and graphics to printing, dissemination and use. Knowledge of the field of global health or international development. Outstanding vision, technical leadership. Superior strategic planning and organizational skills. Superior communications and writing skills, particularly ability to skillfully and persuasively advocate and articulate IntraHealth’s mission. Excellent ability to represent IntraHealth across key aspects of the organization’s work, including in negotiations with clients, consultants and service providers. Ability to travel domestically and internationally, usually not to exceed 20% of total working days per year. Highly conversant with a wide-array of graphic design, publishing, video and audio equipment, software and web-based applications. Proficiency in a second language (French, Spanish), a plus. Ability to perform other job-related duties as assigned.
