My friends and I often make a Tuesday movie run when movies are $5 between 4:00 and 5:30 and sodas and popcorn's $1 each. How can you beat that for an evening out? To be honest, we usually get there just as the previews are starting so I've never noticed if the seats are a little threadbare or there's dirt on the floor. The bathrooms have been clean and the staff has been very friendly. They may be a little short staffed because they collect admission and concession money at the concession stand which takes a few minutes, but I understand places are trying to cut costs to stay open. I would definitely recommend this theater.
Ironic. I am out of town on business, and decided to catch a flick. Based on these reviews, I headed towards SouthPointe. On the way, I look to my right and see "WynnSong Theaters", which looked nice from the outside, and was 10 miles closer, so I pulled off the road. They had the movie I wanted, so in I went. Only when inside did I put two and two together, when I then saw the Sign "CarMike", and I thought, "This is the place that so many people dislike?" I found it to be very clean, and the staff was unbelievably nice and helpful. As luck had it, I was there on "Stimulus Tuesday", so admission was $7.50 (everyday price I believe), and popcorn and drinks were $1 each. The guy behind the concessions offered me free samples of the different flavors of popcorn because I couldn't decide. Had two popcorns (regular and Blue Raspberry) and a Coke Zero, for $3. I'll admit it, the Zero was a little flat. Total price $10.50 for a movie and way too much to eat. Can't beat it. I'm going back tonight. And, oh yeah, I'm white, all the theater workers were black, and the patrons were a mixed racial crowd. Who cares? It's 2010 people, so grow up. Everyone was as friendly as can be. Peace.
We see the matinee's at this theater and never have a problem parking or with anyone being rude. I guess the more crowded with people the higher your chances are of problems. The movie started a little late but the Theater was clean, including restrooms. Staff was friendly at ticket window and snack bar. They have a "Stimulus Tuesday" that generates goodwill considering these tough economic times we live in now. Small popcorn and a small drink for only $1/each. Popcorn is a little too salty but good anyway. Small soda for $1 is ok also, especially with children because they rarily eat or drink all they buy. Candy is sold at a discounted price also. I feel the Theater owner is trying to accomodate patrons and thats commended. We enjoy going there on Tuesdays and for matinee's to save money because entertainment is so expensive and this allows everyone to enjoy a good movie. Thank you.
I agree with Boot. Lots of talking, laughing, cell phones ringing, and other inconsiderate things while the movies play. The parking lot is crowded with narrow spaces - my car always gets dinged there. I'm headed back north to Roxboro where my business is appreciated.
You cannot compare Carmike to Southpoint- there is no comparison. I love Carmike because there is never a line and personally I have never experienced anyone being rude (staff or movie goers). My wife and I go weekly and prefer it any other theather in Durham. If you are looking for the bells and whistles this is not the place but if you want to go catch a movie and not worry about being rushed to find a seat or over crowding this is the place.
I agree with all of these reviews, but do have a place in my heart for this multiplex. They show a wider variety of movies than South Point as noted. The theater is badly in need of a makeover. It is threadbare, dirty and dingy. Glory days when they were the first movie theater with stadium seating are long gone. The staff is poorly managed, but I've never experienced hostility. They seem to be trying to do the best they can in a bad situation. No one wants to be there. I always attribute such attitudes to whomever is leading the team. Pride and joy of service is missing. BUT you can usually get more food in less time than South Point.
I don't think people talk or play with phones any more in this theater than at South Point. You just notice it more here due to the low back seats. I ALWAYS sit in the back row. These are shallow theaters so the back row is close enough to the screen and it cuts the distraction of conversations in front of me. I go to the movies every weekend and live across from South Point. Sometimes I use this theater to see popular first run movies because I know the crowds will be significantly less probably due to the reasons stated in other reviews. Sometimes I am having a meal at Sladelia and this theater is closer. There are times, in other words, when I will go here over South Point. Heed these reviews and understand how to use this theater and you should enjoy your experience.
I disagree with the review below. We have not encounterd any of the problems you specify. Matinee's are when we attend so maybe thats the difference. More people =more problems? The popcorn was too salty but not bad at all. The drinks were good also.
I used to go to this theater at least 2 times a week. After SouthPoint open I saw the difference between class and ass. I've been to 1 movie there in the last five years and the experience was horrible. The theater was dirty, the employees were rude, the popcorn was 20% seeds, the sodas were flat and the movies were attended by more Afro-Americans than a Tarzan movie. Everyone talked to each other out loud like it was their last day on earth. Cell phones were ringing like church bells on a Sunday morning. Men and women alike were cursing like drunken sailors on leave in a third world port. It was the worst experience I've ever had in my life. I'm an Afro-American myself and I can see why white people say bad things about us. Some were nice, but most were rude, vulgar, and seem to enjoy what they were doing. That was and is my last visit to that theater and that area of Durham, NC.
"attended by more Afro-Americans than a Tarzan movie"
OK, firstly, I'm not certain that black folks even like Tarzan, so this doesn't really make sense. Secondly, if you're a racist who thinks that simply being around black folks is a reason to avoid someplace, then perhaps Durham isn't the town for you. I really doubt you're actually a black person.
We have not found this Theater dirty or people rude. The Theater and restrooms have been clean each time we visit! We attend matinee's mostly so maybe thats the reason, I am not sure? Nobody has been loud or rude to us.
Theater is dirty, movie-goers are loud and inconsiderate, employees are rude and apathetic, movie experience is ALWAYS unenjoyable.
Although some of the benefits for going to this theater are gone with the previous closure of the South Square mall, I still prefer this theater to South Point. Its not as shiny glamorous but its less crowded. If you want goodies (variety of foods, etc.) this is not the theatre for you. However, I find that I can always count on this venue to show all of the so-called black movies regardless if Will Smith is staring in them. Can't depend on the other theatres to do that. This one works for me.
i like a movie theatre where i need to put toilet paper on the seats so i don't get crabs or bedbugs or what not. this definitely adds to the feeling of tension while watching action flicks...
